In short

Most UK manufacturing SMEs lose margin not to the production line but to the admin around it: disconnected ERPs, supplier invoices in inboxes, purchase orders re-keyed three times, compliance evidence scattered across email and shared drives. AI doesn’t solve manufacturing problems by going onto the machines; it solves them by connecting the information layer that surrounds production. Wingenious focuses there. Made Smarter match-funded grants of up to £20,000 are available to UK manufacturing SMEs in the Midlands and North. R&D Tax Relief at 27% for loss-making SMEs can recover further costs. Wingenious is based in Wrexham, sitting inside the Wrexham-Flintshire AI Growth Zone, and works the local funding map. Productised consultancy from £2,450 (audit), with delivery as a Quick Win build (£1,500–£3,500, 1–3 days) for small automations or an Implementation Sprint (from £8,000, 4 weeks) for production workflows.

Where AI lands first in a manufacturing SME

The four highest-ROI starting points (all admin, all information-layer, none on the line itself):

  1. Workflow automation across ERP/MRP and the spreadsheets in between. Orders, works orders, despatches, invoices, all connected, no human re-keying. See our workflow automation write-up.
  2. Document handling. Supplier invoices, purchase orders, delivery notes, certificates of conformity, AI-extracted, classified, posted to the right system. See document management.
  3. Inbox + supplier comms. AI triages the production inbox, drafts acknowledgements and despatch updates, routes anything that needs a human.
  4. Compliance evidence trail. Document control, audit prep, deviation logs, all organised so the next audit is a search, not a scramble.

What Wingenious doesn’t do (intentionally)

  • Embedded AI on production equipment. Computer vision on the line, sensor-driven predictive maintenance, vibration analytics: these are specialist fields with specialist vendors. Not Wingenious’s bag. If that’s your need, the audit will say so and route you elsewhere.
  • Deep ISO consultancy. AI can help organise the evidence trail for ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001, but the standards themselves need a qualified ISO consultant or your quality manager. We work alongside them, not in their place.
  • Replace your ERP. Sage, SAP, Epicor, NetSuite: keep them. We build the AI layer that connects them and removes the paper between them.

The Wingenious manufacturing engagement

  1. Readiness Audit: 5 days, £2,450. Plus Made Smarter grant-eligibility check.
  2. Feasibility Study: £3,950, 2–3 weeks. Single use case deep-dived (typically ERP/MRP workflow or document handling). ROI model + grant application support.
  3. Implementation Sprint for production workflows from £8,000, or a Quick Win build for smaller automations from £1,500. Built live, integrated to your stack.
  4. Fractional CAIO: for ongoing AI leadership as you scale.

Where AI lands in this sector

Real use cases we build.

Workflow automation across ERP/MRP

Connect SAP, Sage, Epicor, NetSuite and the half-dozen spreadsheets in between. End-to-end automation of order → works order → despatch → invoicing flows. No human re-keying.

Document handling + paperwork

Supplier invoices, purchase orders, delivery notes, certificates of conformity, all extracted, classified, routed. The admin layer that surrounds production, automated.

Supplier + customer comms

Inbox triage, order acknowledgements, despatch notifications, query routing. AI on the email side of the business so people focus on the production side.

Compliance evidence + audit prep

Document control, audit trails, deviation logs: AI-organised and auto-reported so annual audit prep takes hours, not weeks.

Reporting + management dashboards

Pull data from ERP + spreadsheets + email + the shop-floor whiteboard into a single management view. Live, not month-old.

FAQ

Sector-specific questions.

Is AI worth it for a smaller UK manufacturer?

Yes, and Made Smarter makes it affordable. UK manufacturing SMEs in the Midlands and North can apply for match-funded grants up to £20,000 specifically for technology adoption, including AI. Most Wingenious manufacturing sprints qualify. R&D Tax Relief at 27% for loss-making SMEs (where R&D is 30%+ of total cost) further reduces net cost. The Feasibility Study includes grant-eligibility assessment.

We're on Sage / SAP / Epicor: does AI fit?

Yes. We integrate via APIs (where available), ETL flows (where APIs aren't), or Make.com (the workflow tool we standardise on) and bespoke code via Claude Code that bridge to legacy ERPs. The AI layer sits on top of your ERP, extracting signal from documents, drafting communications, joining the dots between systems, rather than replacing anything. Your shop-floor and finance teams keep using the systems they know.

Do you put AI on the production line itself, e.g. computer vision, sensors, predictive maintenance?

No. Wingenious focuses on the admin and information layer around manufacturing: the paperwork, the systems, the inbox, the compliance trail. Embedded AI on production equipment is a specialist field with its own vendors; we're not it. If that's your need, we'll say so on the audit and point you elsewhere. If your pain is fragmented admin, disconnected systems and document overload, that's where we work.

What about ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 compliance?

ISO compliance is a specialist discipline and Wingenious doesn't claim deep ISO consultancy. What AI does well is the evidence side: document control, audit trails, version history, deviation logs can all be AI-organised and surfaced on demand. A typical pattern is AI guiding the business to keep the right records in the right place so the annual audit becomes a search, not a scramble. We work alongside your ISO consultant or quality manager, not in place of them.

We already have an in-house IT team. Where does Wingenious fit?

Alongside them, not over them. Most UK manufacturing SMEs have an IT lead focused on keeping ERP, networks and shop-floor PCs running; AI workflow design is a different skill set. Wingenious scopes, builds and documents the AI layer, then hands it to your IT team to host and operate under your own cloud billing. They keep change control, security review and day-to-day support; we bring the AI-specific architecture and integration work. Joint working sessions are built into every sprint.

Next step

Start with the audit.

Whichever offer you eventually buy, the readiness audit is the right first step. Five days, twenty pages, a ranked roadmap.
